Back to the USA to see Red Flag 17-1 in action.
Europe was still in “winter mode” when we wanted to leave to the USA and since our flight already departed at 09h45 Saturday morning January 28th from Dusseldorf Airport, we took no risks and drove already on Friday afternoon towards Düsseldorf to spend the night at a local hotel near the airport.
Of course, this is an option that everyone had to decide for themselves, but there is much less stress this way.
No time pressure, enough time to get to the airport (you leave whenever you want to avoid possible traffic jams and or bad weather).
After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, we arrived at the airport around 07h30 to check in.
This went pretty smoothly for all participants in this trip and around 09h05 we were already boarding and we departed right on time.

Flight duration was announced around 11h with arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) around noon local time.
Never saw a dog in the passenger cabin, but he remained very calm during the whole flight!!!
Think he was very happy that he could leave the aircraft since he couldn’t go to the toilet like everyone onboard the aircraft.
After a somewhat bumpy flight, we landed at 11h45 at LAX and our 5th member of this trip arrived surprisingly at the gate next to us with a B747 from KLM which departed from Amsterdam, but normally had to arrive 45min before our flight.
(Everyone has their own choice to leave from the airport of your choice as part of “Plan your trip”).
After the usual border control at the airport and collecting our luggage, we went to pick up our rental car so we could leave for Hawthorn Airport for a helicopter flight over LAX in a Robinson R22 for Air2Air and Air2Ground.
(This flight was offered as an option).

LAX tower has authorized Star Helicopters to operate in the 5 areas shown at the LAX complex.
Because of the intensity of the traffic at LAX, we got only permission this time to fly above the gates at 1600ft.

It was a long day, so after this flight it was time to eat something and then go look up our hotel to enjoy a well deserved nightrest.
